Bhutan has been populated as early as 2000 B.C from the stone implements that are found by an archaeological study. A more certain prehistoric period has been theorized by historians as that of the state with four names. Known as Lhomon kha-shi (country of four approches), Monyul (land of the darkness, before the arrival of Buddhism and reference to the Monpa aboriginal peoples of Bhutan), Lhomon Tsenden kepai-jong jong (sandalwood country) and Lhojong Menjong (country of medicinal herbs).

The Bhutanese are of Tibeto-Burman origin and they are divided into many ethnic groups such as the Ngalops, Sharshokpas, Layaps , Brokpas, Nepalese, and Droyaps each with their distinct language and dress. Some of them still live a nomadic life, depending on their livestock. Since Bhutan is a land- locked country with a rugged, mountainous terrain, there are 14 different dialects still spoken today, differing completely as you travel from west to east. The population of Bhutan is only 600,000 living in a country the same size as Switzerland.

Economists from across the world has been arguing that the key to happiness is obtaining and enjoying material development. However, Bhutan tries to argue the case differently by advocating that amassing material growth does not necessarily lead to happiness. Defying this notion, Bhutan is now trying to measure progress is not by the popular idea of Gross Domestic Product but by through Gross National happiness.
